Smithfield is the seat of Johnston County, and once you leave the town streets it is farm country: older homeplaces, newer homes on family land, and many of them on wells.
Some of those wells are old, and some are shallow. That matters, because a shallow or aging well is more exposed to whatever is happening at the surface, and bacteria is the question that comes with it. It is not a reason to panic. A cracked cap, a worn casing or a well that sits low on the lot can let surface water in. If a lab result comes back positive, the well itself needs attention first. A UV purifier is the ongoing protection after that, not a substitute for fixing the well.
UV light only works on water it can shine through. Cloudy water and grit shade bacteria from the lamp. So the UV purifier is installed after the other stages, with sediment filtered out ahead of it, and it adds no chemicals and no taste.
After flooding, after pump or well work, or whenever the taste, smell or color shifts, test again. A well is not a fixed thing, and a clean result from last year does not cover this year.

Mostly when you’re on a private well and bacteria is a concern. UV light neutralizes 99.9% of bacteria and microorganisms without adding anything to the water. It’s an add-on at $400 installed, it needs clear water to work — sediment has to be filtered out ahead of it — and the bulb is replaced once a year. City water is already disinfected before it reaches you, so there it is extra assurance rather than a need.
On a well, almost always. Sand, silt and grit will shorten the life of every piece of equipment downstream of it, including your pump and your pressure tank. On city water it’s rarely necessary unless you’re on an older line or there’s been recent main work.
