1,4-dioxane in North Carolina drinking water
What it is
1,4-dioxane is an industrial chemical used as a solvent stabiliser. It can turn up in surface water, in groundwater and in treated drinking water.
Why it matters
The EPA's final risk evaluation concluded that 1,4-dioxane presents an unreasonable risk to human health, including cancer risk from drinking-water exposure. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality classifies it as likely carcinogenic to humans.
The practical complication is that standard municipal treatment does not reliably remove it, and there is no federal enforceable drinking water limit for it. So a utility can be fully compliant and 1,4-dioxane can still be present. Those two facts sit together uncomfortably, and pretending otherwise helps nobody.
Why ordinary filters do not help
The molecule is small and highly soluble in water. That combination is what makes it difficult to filter, and it is why a carbon pitcher in the fridge or a filter screwed onto the faucet does not remove it.
What a homeowner can actually do
Point-of-use reverse osmosis is the practical option. It meaningfully reduces 1,4-dioxane rather than eliminating it, and where concentrations are high it is usually paired with additional treatment such as advanced oxidation or specialty media.
Note what that rules out. A whole-home carbon filter is not the answer to this one, and anyone selling you one on that basis is selling you the wrong equipment.
