Apex sits on the same side of the Triangle as Cary and Morrisville and shares most of their water questions. What is different here is the housing and the edges of town.
Much of Apex is newer construction, which takes lead plumbing largely off the table and makes taste, smell and drinking water quality the real conversation. Head far enough southwest and you are into Chatham County, where properties on private wells are a different problem entirely.
Apex is on municipal surface water, like most of western Wake County.
That puts the same two drinking-water questions on the table as elsewhere on this side of the Triangle: 1,4-dioxane and PFAS. Neither is removed well by conventional municipal treatment. For 1,4-dioxane, reverse osmosis is the practical household-level option. For PFAS, reverse osmosis is the treatment type most commonly used for PFAS at home. If PFAS is your concern, look for a unit certified to NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 for PFAS reduction.
For the whole house, the everyday issue is the chlorine that surface water requires. Carbon filtration handles that, and it is the less expensive half of the answer.
These are two different jobs. Whole-home filtration handles chlorine, sediment and smell everywhere. Reverse osmosis handles dissolved solids and lead at one tap. On municipal surface water, most homes end up wanting both.
A house built in the last twenty years is unlikely to have lead solder or lead service lines. That removes one concern and leaves the ones treatment cannot address.
Southwest of town, private wells become common. Wells are a completely different build: iron, sulfur, sediment and low pH rather than chlorine. If you are on a well, start with the well water systems.
